Upon request, serum can be gamma-irradiated. The process for utilizing gamma irradiation to inactivate viruses and mycoplasmas in animal serum, including FBS, newborn calf, porcine and equine sera has been validated. Studies recommend an irradiation dose of 30 to 50 kGy because, ta these levels, the physiochemical properties and cell culture performance of serum are not altered by gamma irradiation. This range is consistent with recently established FDA guidelines for virus titer reduction.
